Two Bowie residents arrested on drug charges

BOWIE (Special) - Two Bowie residents with a history of suspected drug manufacturing face $1 million bonds.

James Caswell and Marta Buck, both 46, were arrested Friday morning in a joint operation by the 97th District Attorney's office, Montague County Sheriff's Department, Department of Public Safety Narcotics Division and Bowie Police.

Justice of the Peace Janell Rodgers set the high bonds on charges of conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance.

Caswell and Buck have been arrested in numerous drug-related incidents in the past year, District Attorney Tim Cole said.

"We felt they were a threat to the community by their continued criminal activities. We hope to keep them from cooking dope and we will try them in December on the original October 2003 manufacturing charge," Cole said.

Cole said drug dealers who get out on low bonds has been a major sticking point for Montague County residents and anti-drug groups.

The charges the two face in December for manufacturing a controlled substance is a first degree felony, with possible penalties of five to 99 years or life imprisonment.

That bust, in October 2003, was called "one of the biggest in 10 years" by Bowie Police. More than 400 grams of methamphetamine was discovered.

Caswell and Buck were arrested most recently on Oct. 7 and charged with manufacture-delivery of a controlled substance. Caswell was also arrested on drug charges on Jan. 24.

Buck was arrested on Aug. 16 on two warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia and also arrested on drug charges in March and June.
