Suspect gets $250,000 bond lowered

August 26, 2004

Reza Vafaiyan got his bond lowered by $100,000 in 78th District Court Wednesday.

Vafaiyan, 55, 2900 Kyle Cove, had been in the Wichita County Jail since Aug. 9 in connection with a possession/transport of certain chemicals with intent to manufacture a controlled substance charge.

Department of Public Safety narcotics officers said investigators found precursors to methamphetamine - including thousands of pseudoephedrine pills - at his store, the Krystal Mart, at 701 N. Eastside Drive.

That followed another seizure from the store in April.

Bond on the August charge was set at $250,000.

Vafaiyan said Wednesday he did not have the money or the means to post bond if it stayed at that amount.

His attorney asked that it be reduced to $75,000, saying Vafaiyan was not likely to miss a court appearance, and that bond was not meant to be oppressive.

Assistant District Attorney Rick Mahler said prosecutors were satisfied with the bond where it was.

District Judge Roy Sparkman set bond at $150,000 after considering both sides. He put several conditions on Vafaiyan if he posts bond.

Vafaiyan would not be allowed to leave the county or to have any precursors to methamphetamine. He would also be required to take part in a weekly reporting system.
